Everyone wants a special place to call home. Use the gorgeous, rounded, upright Brandywine™ Viburnum (Viburnum nudum ‘Bulk’) to create a restful, vibrant landscape for yourself, your family and friends. Even butterflies and birds will want to come visit! It’s true that Brandywine is a lovely Viburnum variety with some of the prettiest fall berries of any flowering shrub. But those amazing berries start out first as spring blossoms.
During the spring bloom time, you’ll be thrilled to see and smell the cute rounded clusters of tiny, fragrant white blooms. Each blossom is punctuated with fragile yellow stamens that stand tall above the petals. They’ll capture light and twinkle in the sun and even the moonlight! They smell like heaven! Then, showy, lustrous 4-inch oblong summer leaves grace the shrub from top to bottom all season long. Like many Viburnum, this deciduous shrub will grow with a rounded habit and upright nature. It works so hard for you without asking much in return.
Beautiful clusters of berries develop in fall. They start off a vibrant green, then transition to eye-catching candy apple pink and age to rich dark blue. The berries are spectacular in autumn when both colors mix together in the same clusters. The Brandywine is noted for these most intense colored berries. It’s a truly remarkable show!
Though edible, the berries are highly acidic and not very palatable. For wildlife, on the other hand, the birds love them in the fall and winter when food sources are lean. Although your local songbirds will love eating them, you may have a few clusters persist, giving you some welcome winter interest and décor. Even if those little birdies are extra hungry, the well-balanced, bare, branching structure itself will catch and sculpt the snow to give you something nice to study during the dormant season.
And just wait until the incredible fall color show! When the green leaves deepen into a luscious mix of red, burgundy and purple! They’ll help showcase the outstanding display of berries to perfection.
You’ll love the handsome good looks of Brandywine™ shrubs all year long! Butterflies and honeybees find the flowers irresistible, too. You’ll feel great about sharing the bounty with these important partners in our shared ecosystem.
Planting and Application:Use this colorful shrub to create the most amazing modern foundation plantings. You’ll get year-long eye candy and feed the birds at the same time. Brandywine™ is an excellent backdrop for mixed shrub borders or perennial gardens. Multiple seasons of interest and incredible fall color make this a standout selection to repeat throughout your landscape.
This compact shrub is pretty enough to use as a single specimen in a place of honor. Place it where you’ll see it from inside the house if you can. Pair it with other Viburnums for a Nature Garden. It works with many styles, including cottage, modern, rustic, Zen and even contemporary.
Plant several for a lovely hedge anywhere you want a pop of fall color. It is dense enough to provide pretty screening. To create a solid screen, plant 4 feet apart on center. You’ll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Use a short hedge behind your patio seating for a pleasant, friendly amount of privacy. Plant one at the corner of your garage to soften the transition from the front to the side yard. Use one or more in the lawn or included them on a berm planting.
This is the ideal plant for creekside plantings or on the side of a Rain Garden. After all, this plant is native to the swamps and bogs from the East Coast to the South.
This is also an ideal container plant because of its year-round appeal. Plant a few in containers to decorate the patio or poolside.

#ProPlantTips for Care:Brandywine™ is a hardy plant that shouldn’t give you any trouble. Self-pollinating, it has good berry production all on its own. We do recommend you plant more than one Brandywine for the best results. However, it makes a wonderful pollinator for ‘Winterthur’ or another Viburnum nudum for more berries.
This Viburnum variety requires a moist, well-drained location. Plant in full sun to part sun in almost any soil type but does best in soil that is high in organic matter. Give it evenly moist, well-drained soil. If you see puddles forming long after a rain, create a mound 18-inches high and plant directly in that mound.
Don’t shear them, or you’ll lose the flowers and fruit for next year. Instead, prune any crossing, diseased or dead branches back as needed after the flowers are passed. Wait to Prune after flowering, as the shrub blooms on old wood. You can also skip tip pruning and renewal prune only if you wish to have fruit for birds. Renewal pruning removes the largest, thickest stems from the ground every few years. This will rejuvenate your shrub. Leave the young stems in place, which will flower nicely for you next spring.
