Compact Professor Ed Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa ‘Professor Ed’) provides cute white blooms, dark superfruit and gorgeous fall color. Their rounded form is a welcome addition to full sun or partially shaded areas.
Feed butterflies and honey bees nectar from their clustered white blooms. It’s fun to watch the dark purple berries develop over the season!
Planting and Application:Glossy green leaves catch the sunlight all summer long. As the season progresses and nighttime temperatures dip…the foliage turns a very attractive fall color display of red and purple tones!
Of course, there are enormous benefits to Aronia beyond their value as a well-behaved landscape shrub. Those bitter berries are edible and filled with more antioxidants than blueberries!
Harvest your share before the birds take them all! Use in all kinds of recipes and sweeten to taste.
Rich in tannins, these mouth-puckering berries taste a little like very dry red wine. They can be used fresh, frozen or dried!
Add a fruiting border to your Victory Garden with a low hedge. Space them three feet apart on center; measuring from the center of one to the center of the next.
This desirable cultivar was named in honor of Professor of Horticulture Edward Hasselkus, Curator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Arboretum. His skill in evaluating plants for their hardiness, disease resistance, and aesthetic qualities helped introduce many new cultivars to market.
#ProPlantTips for Care: Professor Ed Aronia will flower and fruit best in full sun, but does tolerate partial shade. Please give it at least four hours of sunlight a day.
As the roots get established during the first season, water carefully by touching the soil near the base of the shrub daily. There is no need to water if the ground is still damp; however, give it water as it starts to get dry.
Prune in early spring to correct criss-crossing branches and to remove any broken branches. Mulch over the base of the shrub, then pull it back away from touching the stems.
